Shipping Services & Options
What types of shipping services do you offer?
Lloyd International offers comprehensive freight forwarding services worldwide, including:
- Air Freight Forwarding: Reliable air freight solutions connecting your business to markets worldwide, from small parcels to large shipments
- Ocean Freight Forwarding: Both FCL (Full Container Load) and LCL (Less than Container Load) across key trade lanes
- Trucking & Inland Transportation: Pick-up, delivery, and port/airport transfers to complete your shipment from start to finish
- Consolidation Services: Cost-effective solutions combining multiple shipments into one container
- Cargo Insurance: End-to-end coverage for both air and ocean shipments
We handle everything from raw materials to finished products across all industries and destinations.
What's the difference between LCL and FCL shipping?
LCL (Less than Container Load) is ideal when your shipment doesn't fill an entire container. Your cargo is consolidated with other shipments, and you only pay for the space you use. This is cost-effective for smaller volumes but may have slightly longer transit times due to consolidation and deconsolidation.
FCL (Full Container Load) means you're renting an entire container exclusively for your cargo. This is more economical for larger shipments, offers faster transit times, and reduces handling since your goods aren't consolidated with others. It also provides added security as the container is sealed from origin to destination.
How long does international shipping typically take?
Transit times vary significantly based on origin, destination, shipping method, and routing. Generally:
- Ocean Freight: Typically ranges from 2-6 weeks depending on the specific trade lane, ports, and whether transshipment is required
- Air Freight: Usually 5-10 days door-to-door, including customs clearance and final delivery
These timeframes may vary based on customs clearance procedures, documentation processing, weather conditions, and seasonal demand. We provide detailed timeline estimates tailored to your specific shipment and destination.
When should I choose air freight over ocean freight?
Consider air freight when:
- Your shipment is time-sensitive or urgent
- You're shipping high-value, low-volume goods
- You need to meet tight production schedules or seasonal deadlines
- The goods are perishable or have a short shelf life
- Speed is more important than cost savings
Ocean freight is better for larger volumes, heavier shipments, and when cost efficiency is the priority over speed. Our team can help you determine the most appropriate shipping method for your specific needs.
Logistics & Documentation
What documents do I need for international shipping?
Typical documentation requirements include:
- Commercial Invoice: Details of the goods, value, and transaction
- Packing List: Detailed description of package contents, weights, and dimensions
- Bill of Lading (Ocean) or Air Waybill (Air): Contract of carriage
- Certificate of Origin: May be required for certain goods or trade agreements
- Import Permits: Required for regulated goods (food, pharmaceuticals, etc.)
- Insurance Certificate: If marine insurance is purchased
We guide you through all documentation requirements and handle the paperwork to ensure compliance with customs regulations.
Do you handle customs clearance?
Yes, we coordinate the entire customs clearance process through our global network of trusted customs broker partners. We handle all required documentation, duty payments, and compliance requirements to ensure your goods clear customs smoothly and efficiently at destination.
Our experience and established relationships with customs authorities worldwide help minimize delays and ensure compliance with local regulations.
Can you ship hazardous or regulated materials?
Yes, we can handle hazardous materials and regulated goods, but these require special documentation, packaging, and handling procedures. Hazardous materials must be properly classified, packaged, labeled, and documented according to IMDG (ocean) or IATA (air) regulations.
Contact us early in your planning process if you're shipping hazardous or regulated materials so we can ensure all requirements are met and avoid delays or compliance issues.
Cost & Insurance
How is international shipping cost calculated?
Shipping costs depend on several factors:
- Weight and Volume: For ocean freight, charged by cubic meter or container size; for air freight, based on actual or volumetric weight (whichever is greater)
- Origin and Destination: Distance and specific port or airport locations
- Service Type: LCL, FCL, or air freight
- Cargo Type: Standard goods vs. hazardous or oversized items
- Additional Services: Insurance, customs clearance, delivery, storage, etc.
- Market Conditions: Seasonal demand, fuel costs, and capacity availability
We provide detailed quotes based on your specific shipment requirements. Contact us with your shipment details for an accurate estimate.
Do I need cargo insurance?
While not legally required, cargo insurance is highly recommended for both ocean and air shipments. Carrier liability is limited under international conventions, typically covering only a fraction of your cargo's actual value.
Cargo insurance protects your investment against loss or damage during transit from perils such as accidents, theft, natural disasters, or mishandling. The cost is typically a small percentage of your cargo value and provides peace of mind throughout the entire journey.
Lloyd International can arrange comprehensive cargo insurance coverage and help you determine the appropriate protection for your shipment.
Are there any hidden fees I should know about?
Lloyd International believes in transparent pricing. Our quotes include all known charges upfront. However, some costs may vary or arise unexpectedly depending on specific circumstances:
- Customs Duties and Taxes: Determined by destination country customs authorities based on your goods and their declared value
- Storage Fees: If cargo isn't collected promptly after arrival at destination
- Examination Fees: If customs requests physical inspection of your shipment
- Documentation Corrections: Fees for correcting errors or amendments to shipping documents
- Fuel Surcharges: May fluctuate based on current fuel prices and carrier policies
We communicate all potential charges clearly and provide updates if any unexpected costs arise during transit.
